In as much as light fractures the peace of night, darkness can wrap itself around the brightest sherd and create an intimate glow. An ambiance that nocturnal artists have welcomed for millennia.
Of course, end-of-day activity isn't everyone's cup of tea - 6am to 6pm is favourite - but our Matt Sayers is a night worker. He paints by spotlight, torch, and candle because it's a necessary aspect of his technique. The evening shadows provide him with an insight into the muted light of polluted industrial daytime.
'Night-time is naturally weighted with ghosts from the past, but somehow remains eternal', he says.
OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMES LIGHT.
